If you’ve ever traveled between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, you know the scenic drive is as breathtaking as it is, at times, frustrating. With traffic congestion steadily growing as Los Cabos welcomes more residents and tourists, local leaders are taking bold steps to improve mobility—and the Los Cabos Coordinating Council (CCC) is at the forefront of these efforts.
It’s about time –And We’re EXCITED!
The long-awaited project for a third road connecting Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo is finally back on the agenda. The Los Cabos Coordinating Council (CCC), in collaboration with authorities from all three levels of government, has announced renewed efforts to address the issue.
Currently, the Tourist Corridor and the Airport Bypass (toll road) are the only two routes between the two cities. Overcrowding on both has caused significant traffic concerns for locals and visitors alike. Following a recent meeting with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications, and Transportation (SICT) of Baja California Sur, authorities have confirmed conditions are now favorable to explore options for a much-needed third road.
A Plan in Action
Julio Castillo, head of the CCC, highlighted the importance of collaboration in moving this project forward. The initial steps involve working closely with municipal authorities and landowners, whose willingness to make land available has been a key factor in advancing the proposal.1
The next phase will involve the City Council’s technical team, tasked with determining a feasible route for the road. Once the route is defined, efforts will focus on securing financial resources to bring the project to life.
Why a Third Road Matters
The addition of a third road is more than just a convenience; it’s a necessity. The rapid growth of Los Cabos, coupled with the booming tourism and real estate markets, has made infrastructure improvements essential. Reduced traffic congestion will not only improve the quality of life for residents but also ensure a smoother, more enjoyable experience for the millions of tourists who visit the region each year.
What’s Next?
While the timeline for completion remains uncertain, the commitment from all stakeholders signals a strong push to deliver this much-needed infrastructure in the medium term. The hope is that this third road will finally provide a long-term solution to the traffic challenges between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.
