Storm clouds and rain over the Los Cabos coastline as Hurricane Rachel moves away

Hurricane Rachel Moves Away — But Los Cabos Still Faces Rain and Thunderstorms Today

Hurricane Rachel is moving away from Mexico, but Los Cabos still has a medium-high chance of moderate to heavy rain and thunderstorms Tuesday.

LOS CABOS, BCS — Hurricane Rachel continues moving away from Mexico Tuesday, but Los Cabos is not completely finished with unsettled weather.

At 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, Rachel was about 1,025 kilometers (637 miles) west-southwest of Cabo San Lucas, according to reporting based on Mexico’s Servicio Meteorológico Nacional. The Category 1 hurricane had sustained winds of about 140 km/h (87 mph), gusts near 165 km/h (103 mph) and was moving west at approximately 13 km/h (8 mph).

The important update for Cabo is reassuring: Rachel no longer represents a danger to Mexican territory as the cyclone continues farther into the Pacific.

Rain is still possible in Los Cabos

Rachel itself is no longer expected to produce rainfall over Mexico, but Baja California Sur authorities are monitoring other atmospheric conditions. State Protección Civil forecasts a medium-high probability of moderate to heavy rain in Los Cabos and southern La Paz Tuesday, with electrical activity possible.

That means residents and visitors should remain cautious around low-lying roads, arroyos and areas prone to rapid runoff if thunderstorms develop. Conditions can vary considerably from one part of the municipality to another.

What to know today

There are no special cyclone precautions being issued because of Rachel’s current track. The practical concern is localized rain and thunderstorms rather than the hurricane’s center.

Drivers should avoid crossing flowing water, and anyone planning boating, fishing or other marine activities should check current port and marine conditions before departing.

The Cabo Magazine will continue monitoring official Protección Civil and meteorological updates throughout the day.
