Los Cabos Loses $354 Million in Federal Infrastructure Funding — What Could It Mean for Growth?

A sharp reduction in federal infrastructure funding could affect how Los Cabos tackles roads, drainage, water and rapid growth in 2026.

By Santiago Villaseñor | News & Local Affairs

Los Cabos is facing a major reduction in federal infrastructure money at a time when the municipality is under intense pressure to keep pace with population and development growth.

Recent local reporting puts the municipality’s 2026 allocation from the federal Social Infrastructure Contributions Fund, known as FAIS, at roughly MXN $138 million, down from approximately MXN $492 million previously — a difference of about MXN $354 million.

State officials have also warned that additional federal reductions could follow in 2027.

Why it matters in Los Cabos

Federal social-infrastructure funds support basic public works, particularly projects intended to address community needs. In Los Cabos, that conversation comes as residents continue raising concerns about roads, drainage, water supply and infrastructure struggling to keep pace with new construction.

The reduction does not mean every proposed Los Cabos project will automatically lose funding. Municipal, state and federal resources can come from multiple programs, and individual projects have their own budgets and approval processes.

But the size of the reduction puts additional pressure on local officials to prioritize projects and identify other funding sources.

For one of Mexico’s fastest-growing tourism destinations, the larger question is increasingly clear: how does Los Cabos continue expanding while ensuring public infrastructure expands with it?
