More Than MXN $2 Billion Planned for Baja California Sur’s Electrical Grid

As Los Cabos continues to expand, one of the region’s less glamorous infrastructure issues is becoming increasingly important: electricity.

The Federal Electricity Commission is moving forward with more than MXN $2 billion in electrical infrastructure investment in Baja California Sur, according to details reported this week.

Nearly MXN $1.76 billion of the program is tied to transmission projects expected to add approximately 400 megavolt-amperes of capacity, additional reactive-power equipment and more than 108 kilometers of infrastructure.

For Los Cabos, one of the most relevant projects is an increase in transformation capacity for the area. The project is under development, with operation currently projected for December 2027. Federal electricity planning documents have separately identified improvements and equipment needs in the Los Cabos and San José del Cabo electrical system during this period.

Why does that matter?

Los Cabos continues to add hotels, residences, gated communities, restaurants and commercial development. Each new project adds another layer of demand to an electrical system serving one of Mexico’s fastest-growing destinations.

Additional transmission and transformation capacity does not eliminate the possibility of outages, particularly during periods of extreme heat and unusually high demand. It does, however, represent an important piece of the infrastructure needed to support continued growth.

For the real estate and hospitality industries, roads and water usually receive much of the attention. Power capacity deserves a place in that conversation as well.
