Emergency dispatchers in Los Cabos are dealing with as many as 15 false or prank 911 calls per day, according to fresh local reporting — calls that can consume time and resources intended for genuine emergencies.
For a municipality spread across Cabo San Lucas, San José del Cabo and large outlying areas, emergency response capacity matters. A false call can require dispatchers to evaluate information and potentially direct police, fire or medical resources toward an incident that does not exist.
A public-safety issue, not a joke
Los Cabos receives emergency calls covering everything from traffic collisions and fires to medical incidents and public-safety concerns. During periods of heavy tourism, major events or severe weather, demand can increase further.
The important takeaway for residents and visitors is straightforward: 911 should be reserved for genuine emergencies.
People calling should be prepared to provide the location, nature of the emergency and any immediate dangers as clearly as possible.
The number of prank calls may sound small compared with the overall volume handled by an emergency system, but repeated unnecessary calls add up. In a real emergency, minutes matter.
