La Paz Carnaval The World Dances

Carnaval de La Paz, Baja California Sur

The Carnaval de La Paz 2025, under the theme “The World Dances”, will take place from February 13 to 18 on Álvaro Obregón Avenue, in the heart of the city.

The Carnaval de La Paz is one of the most anticipated celebrations in Baja California Sur, blending music, dance, tradition, and community spirit. Held annually in February, it brings together locals and tourists for a week-long festival filled with parades, cultural performances, and live entertainment along Álvaro Obregón Avenue, the city’s coastal boardwalk.

Origins & Meaning of the Celebration

The Carnaval de La Paz dates back to 1898, making it one of Mexico’s oldest carnivals. Inspired by European Mardi Gras traditions, the festival was originally a way for locals to celebrate before Lent, a period of reflection in Christian tradition. Over time, it evolved into a cultural event showcasing regional music, dance, and artistry.

How Often Is It Celebrated?

The Carnaval is held annually, typically in the second or third week of February, leading up to Ash Wednesday. Each year, the festival adopts a unique theme, reflecting different aspects of culture, history, or global influences.

What to Expect at the Carnaval de La Paz?

The event is much more than just a party—it’s an immersive cultural experience.

1. Parades & Floats

  • Colorful parades take place along the Malecón (boardwalk), featuring elaborate floats decorated according to the year’s theme.
  • Each parade includes comparsas (dance groups), local schools, and performers dressed in extravagant costumes.

2. Live Music & Performances

  • The festival hosts top national and international artists, playing genres like regional Mexican, cumbia, pop, and rock.
  • In 2025, the lineup includes Los Ángeles Azules, Panteón Rococó, and Chayanne, among others.
  • Additional performances include local dance troupes, theater groups, and street performers.

3. Street Food & Vendors

  • The Carnaval fairgrounds are filled with food stalls offering traditional Mexican street food, such as:
    • Tacos de pescado (fish tacos)
    • Ceviche and aguachiles
    • Churros and marquesitas (sweet treats)
    • Coconut water & micheladas (beer-based drinks)
  • Handmade crafts, jewelry, and souvenirs are available from local artisans.

4. Coronation of the Carnaval Royalty

  • Each year, the festival crowns a King and Queen of the Carnaval.
  • This tradition adds to the festive and competitive spirit of the event.

5. Family-Friendly Activities

  • Children’s Carnavalito: A special day (February 23, 2025) dedicated to family-friendly entertainment, featuring Luli Pampín.
  • Cultural exhibitions & workshops: Art displays, interactive activities, and storytelling sessions take place throughout the event.

Tips & Recommendations for Enjoying the Carnaval

  1. Arrive early to find good spots along the parade route, especially near Álvaro Obregón Avenue.
  2. Stay hydrated and wear comfortable clothing & shoes—the weather can be warm, and there’s a lot of walking.
  3. Try local food from vendors but be mindful of food hygiene.
  4. Secure accommodations in advance—hotels reach near full capacity during the event.
  5. Keep an eye on your belongings—as in any large festival, be cautious of pickpockets.
  6. Consider booking a “Fan Zone” ticket for premium access to concerts and a front-row experience.

Why You Should Visit?
