BCS Has MXN $45 Million for Natural-Disaster Emergencies — What It Means for Los Cabos

Storm clouds and emergency preparedness scene in Los Cabos, Baja California Sur
Baja California Sur has about MXN $45 million available for natural-disaster response as hurricane season continues. Here’s why Los Cabos is central to the discussion.

By Santiago Villaseñor | News & Local Affairs

Baja California Sur currently has about MXN $45 million available in its disaster-response fund, a figure drawing attention as the state remains in the heart of Pacific hurricane season.

Governor Víctor Manuel Castro Cosío said this month that the resources could prove insufficient in a major emergency and that the state would seek additional federal support if necessary. Local reporting also cites Civil Protection officials identifying Los Cabos and La Paz as the municipalities with the greatest concentration of critical points.

Why Los Cabos matters

For Los Cabos, disaster preparedness is not theoretical. Tropical storms can quickly affect arroyos, roads, low-lying neighborhoods, utilities and access between communities. The municipality also has the added responsibility of protecting a large visitor population that may be unfamiliar with local evacuation routes and storm procedures.

The MXN $45 million figure should not be interpreted as the total amount that could ever be spent after a disaster. State authorities can seek other resources, including federal assistance, depending on the scale and circumstances of an emergency.

For residents and property owners, the practical message is to prepare before a warning is issued: know local Civil Protection guidance, avoid crossing flowing arroyos, maintain basic supplies and follow official information during rapidly changing weather.
