Residents are once again reporting power interruptions across Los Cabos, raising questions about whether local electrical infrastructure is keeping pace with the destination’s continued growth.
LOS CABOS, BCS — Power outages are once again becoming part of the conversation in Los Cabos.
Following reports from residents, the Los Cabos municipal government says it has met with representatives of the Comisión Federal de Electricidad, or CFE, and is seeking continued working meetings to address electrical failures and needed infrastructure improvements.
Municipal officials say CFE has already completed maintenance on some facilities, although additional rehabilitation work remains pending. The municipality does not currently maintain its own count of outages or a list of the areas experiencing the most interruptions because electricity service falls under CFE.
A Bigger Question for a Growing Los Cabos
The outages come as Los Cabos continues to deal with the infrastructure demands created by years of rapid growth.
According to INEGI, the municipality’s population increased from 238,487 people in 2010 to 351,111 in 2020, an increase of roughly 47% in just ten years.
More residents, homes and businesses ultimately mean more electricity moving through the system.
And demand across Baja California Sur has already been reaching new highs. CFE reported that the state recorded a historic maximum electricity demand of 727.3 megawatts on September 25, 2025.
That does not necessarily mean every local outage is caused by a shortage of electricity generation. Distribution equipment, substations, transformers and other local infrastructure can also play a role in service interruptions.
CFE itself has acknowledged the need for additional investment. Among its strategic generation projects is a new 240-megawatt CCI Los Cabos facility, part of broader efforts to strengthen electricity capacity.
What Homeowners Should Know
For homeowners, property managers and vacation-rental operators, recurring outages are more than an inconvenience.
Air-conditioning, refrigeration, internet service, security systems, pool equipment and other systems found throughout Cabo homes can all be affected when power goes down.
Backup power is therefore becoming an increasingly important consideration, particularly for higher-end properties and vacation rentals.
Solar can be part of that solution, but homeowners should understand that a standard grid-connected solar system does not automatically keep a home powered during an outage. Systems specifically designed with battery storage and appropriate inverters can provide backup electricity when the grid is unavailable.
Generators remain another option for properties that require longer-duration backup.
What Happens Next?
For now, Los Cabos officials say they intend to continue meeting with CFE and following up on both reported outages and rehabilitation of electrical infrastructure.
The bigger question is one Los Cabos will increasingly have to answer as the destination continues to grow:
Can essential infrastructure grow as quickly as the community around it?
For residents, property owners and businesses, reliable electricity is no longer simply a utility issue. It is becoming part of the larger conversation about how Los Cabos manages growth.
