SAN JOSÉ DEL CABO, Baja California Sur — March 17, 2026
Commuters and residents in Los Cabos may want to plan an alternate route tomorrow morning MARCH 18, 2026 at 8am.
A group of freight transport drivers working on the Fonatur roundabout overpass project in San José del Caboannounced they will block key roads near Mega, City Market, and Chedraui beginning Wednesday, March 18 at approximately 8:00 a.m. as part of a protest over unpaid work.
The planned closures could affect one of the busiest traffic zones in the region — the Fonatur roundabout corridor, a critical connection between the Transpeninsular Highway, the hotel zone, and central San José del Cabo.
Why the Protest Is Happening
The dispute involves truck drivers who say they have not been paid for work performed on the new Fonatur overpass construction project, which has been underway since 2025.
According to statements from transport union leaders affiliated with the Confederación Autónoma de Trabajadores y Empleados de México (CATEM), drivers claim the construction company Placosa S.A. de C.V. owes them nearly 10 million pesos for hauling earth, asphalt, and materials for the project.
Transporters say they have waited more than three months for payment, despite previous agreements and meetings with authorities.
One union representative explained that many drivers can no longer afford to continue operating because of rising fuel costs and unpaid invoices.
“This work supports our families, and for three months they have only given us excuses,” transport representatives stated during the protest announcement.
Roads Expected to Be Affected
If the protest proceeds as announced, closures are expected near the Fonatur traffic circle and surrounding commercial area, including roads leading to:
Mega Commercial Center
City Market
Chedraui Selecto
Access routes toward the hotel zone and downtown San José del Cabo
Transport drivers say the blockades are meant to pressure both the company and authorities to resolve the payment dispute.
What Locals and Visitors Should Expect
Because the Fonatur roundabout is one of the most heavily trafficked intersections in Los Cabos, even a partial closure could create major traffic delays throughout San José del Cabo.
Drivers heading between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, or traveling toward the airport corridor, may want to allow additional travel time.
Some residents are already advising commuters to use the toll road corridor where possible to avoid the congestion expected near the protest site.
Authorities have not yet announced an official traffic management plan.
A Growing Tension Around Infrastructure Projects
The protest highlights a broader issue surrounding large infrastructure projects in rapidly growing destinations like Los Cabos, where construction relies heavily on independent transport operators.
In this case, drivers say they invested heavily in diesel, equipment maintenance, and labor while working on the project — costs that many say they can no longer absorb without payment.
Union representatives are now calling on federal authorities, the Mexican government, and local officials to intervene before the dispute escalates further.
Bottom Line
If you live in or are visiting San José del Cabo, tomorrow may not be the best day to test your patience on the main roads.
With truck drivers threatening to block the Fonatur corridor early in the morning, travelers should expect delays, consider alternate routes, and allow extra time for commutes.
The situation is still developing, and updates are expected as negotiations continue.
